Testing
Solar Devices
Our solar powered DC fans are making a lot of
wind!
We can let them run on 12 Voltage with amazing low 11 Watt consumption.
For very large rooms and heigh ceilings we recommand a 24 Volt
system with double of cool air and still low 50 Watt consumption.
Next week we will test a new DC dimmer, this will control both
speed and consumption.
Our solar powered LORENTZ DC pump for swimming pools is working
as strong as promised on the specification. Here we can add
a "AC power pack" that enables the pump to be supplied
by a gemset or standard grid power for cloudy periods (fully
automaticly) or for higher filtration need:

Water
purification

We are now promoting "water purification"
systems:
Our german managed new partner in Laos Ourworld
is producing water purification units from small scale to big
scale - depending on the needs of the customers. Ín short
words, those systems consists of a filtration station followed
by an OSRAM UVC lamp - Ourworld is exclusive distributor for
thise OSRAM products.
The purifiers are not only suitabel for drinking water supply
but they are - and thats more interesting for Koh Samui - a
very effective swimming pool purifier. Here your
benefits:
> Protection against germs and viruses, reduced formation
of mold, bacteria and algae
> About 90 % reduction of chlorine additives and other chemicals
in swimming pools
> No smell of chlorine, no skin and eye irritation
> Environmentally friendlier than conventional methods
Those OSRAM systems are available wordwide.
As they use a very small amount of energy, they can run or on
public grid or on a small solar panel.
We are happy to provide further information
concerning the whole concept of water cycle as your requirement.

We are promoting now LED path lights and LED
spotlight (to replace 35 W halogen).
Amazing low power consumption of 1 W or less (path lights) and
3 W for the spotlights.
These LED uses quality chips from Taiwan or USA and thus promise
a long life up to 50.000 hrs.
Nevertheless we will test them for a longer period!

Energy
Consulting
Energy consulting is not an easy
job. It consist of different topics:
- Energy basics - why is cheap green tint glass better than
high tech "E-glass"?
- Energy believes - to convince that even in Thailand you can
survive without air conditioner.
- Energy savings - why you should pay 300 USD for a ceiling
fan and 800 USD for a small fridge?
- Energy systems - how to mix different energy sources (grid/solar/gemset...)
in a smart way.
- Reduce your energy load - invest less money for reneweable
energy
- Finally: Choose the best quality solar devices
More about these topics can be
downloaded here:

ENERGY CONSULTING

Samui Service is now energy consultant for a very large Villa
Project in Thailand. This project has a limitated energy supply
and thus needs energy efficient solutions. Not only we will
install solar water heaters, solar powered DC fans, solar
DC pumps for pool and waterfalls but during this projects
we also have resized the Air cons units - this alone will
save a huge amount of money. Then we have assisted to develop
a low energy lighting system and we will help to install a
smart diesel powered backup system to cover periods of very
high loads and power cuts. Finally the european Landlord has
choosen us to develop an energy managment plan for the Villa
and to communicate with the engineering groups during his
absence. This whole package is called "Energy
Consulting". A detailled case study will follow.

STUDER backup system
You
suffer from regulary power outages? We can offer you a reliable
backup system to supply your connected loads with the desired
power. Two components: A Made in Switzerland system controller
from STUDER and our AGM batteries. The STUDER is connected to
your fuses box and controls your energy supply. When a power
cut occurs it will switch to battery supply in as little as
20-40 milliseconds. Thus it can even work as a powerful USP
for hours for your small office or for a larger server room
- keep in mind that a standard USP lasts as short as 30 minutes.
We design the battery size according to your need - how many
devices must be connected for how many hours.
The STUDER is a pure sinus inverter - the DC power from your
batteries is transformed to real AC power and can supply every
electric device. Depending on the model it can handle between
1 kWh and 8kWh. Surge power of your water pump or your fridge
& freezer? No problem, the STUDER can handle up to 250 %
of the nominal power! When grid power is back the STUDER switches
back and starts reloading the batteries. In addition the STUDER
can also start a diesel engine and can charge the batteries
with clean solar energy.

LORENTZ Etracker in action
Solar
powered DC pumps are the most economical solar applications
- they need no batteries. Whereever you have no grid on site
a LORENTZ solar pump "Made in Germany" is the best
choice to pump water directly to a pond or to a storage tank.
To rise the pumped water volume Lorentz is offering a one axis
tracking system (see pics from our customer). What is behind:
A solar tracker is mounted under the solar array and follows
the sun during the daytime. According to our customer the pump
volume has risen about 40 %. A LORENTZ etracker is a good investment!

Solar Water Heater versus Heat Pumps
For Hotels a Heat
Pump is a good choice to produce hot water. Heat Pumps from
reputated manufacteurs like Stiebel Eltron (see here)
are reliable and about three times more effective than the conventionel
electric heaters. But is a Heat Pump a better choice than a
Solar System? Let me give you an example:
For a hotel building with 30 bedrooms and a lot of bathtubs
you will have to install at maximum a 3.000 liter hot water
system (50 liters per guest and day in case of 100 % occupancy).
- A Stiebel Eltron system costs with installation around 600.000
THB.
- Our Heat Pipe system (see here)
costs also 600.000 THB.
Both with a well insulated tank, controller unit, 3-way-mixer-valve,
installation - both systems are "state of the art"!
Stiebel Eltron gives 3 years warranty on the Heat Pump, we give
5 years warranty on the whole system.
Now compare the running costs - let us make some quick and dirty
calculations:
- Occupancy rate in average
70 % means around 2.000 l of warm water at 60 °C per day.
- With cold water at 25 °C you need 81 kWh per day - remember:
1,16 Wh to heat one liter of water by 1 °C.
- A Stiebel Eltron system might have a total COP of 4.0 - thus
20 kWh of energy is needed
- Running cost for electricity per year are 30.000 THB with
grid power (4 THB/kWh) and 150.000 THB with a diesel generator
(20 THB/kWh).
- The running costs of our solar system are maybe 2.000 THB
(grid power) and 10.000 THB (diesel generator) per year.
Conclusion:
The investment is the same, our warranty is longer and: Be aware
of the running costs!

Hot water for Anantara Resort
Here
one of our three Solar Water Heaters for the elephant camp at
the amazing 5-star Anantara Resort, Golden Triangle.
Because we sent them a manual they could handle to install it
by themselves. Nevertheless, Samui Service went on site to check
the installation:
As the Anantara engineer team didnt believe that water would
be "so hot" they didnt install a water mixer to chill
the 65°C solar water by cold water. Well, the water scalded
a mahout yesterday, now they trust the system!
The Anantara Resort wants us to quote two more Solar Water Heater
(SWH) Systems:
- From november
until march it is getting very cold in the North of Thailand!
To save money and energy, we will design a SWH system for their
400 m³ infintiy pool - we will have to prove that Solar
is cheaper and better than gas fired oven or heat pumps. We
will setup a system that can substitute part of the hot water
supply for the 84 rooms as well.
- The second quotation will be for the now gas fired laundry
section.
By the way: The
pool is wonderful!

Pay-Back-Calculations
"
Our engineer in Bangkok has calculated a pay-back period of
1 or 2 years"
To avoid confusion and dumb or false statements here
the calculation:
- To heat 1 liter
of water you need 1,16 Wh per Kelvin (K)
- "Wh" means Watt-hour: 1000 Wh = 1 kWh, the common
unit on your electricity bill
- So you need 1 kWh to heat 30 liter of water from 20 °C
to 50 °C (30 K)
- If your cold water has 20 °C and you want to have a shower
at 35 °C using 60 liter of water:
- You must heat 60 liter of water from 20 °C to 35 °C
How much energy
you need? Yes, you need 1 kWh! If you want to supply 4 peoples?
Yes, 4 kWh
How much energy per year: 365 * 4 = 1.460 kWh
One kWh costs you 3,5 THB (not 5 or 10 or 12 THB!)
Conclusion:
4 people uses 5.110 THB per year to have a warm shower every
day.
If you pay 20.000
THB for your Solar Water Heater, the pay-back period is 4 years.
If you pay 50.000 THB for your Solar Water Heater, the pay-back
period is 10 years.
Don't let you fool from a Bangkok based engineer!
